Things used:
A pressure sensitive tablet
Adobe Illustrator
Sketch
So I had a drawing laying around and wanted to do something with it to fill in some spare time,
this was the first time that I did this technique and took me in total around 5 hours
Spend on : figuring out the controls, which brush to use ,settings, thinking of a new design etc.
First I’ll explain why I used Illustrator,
It’s a vector based program and simply said it means that you can enlarge your ‘lines’ without getting pixelation,
in comparison to let’s say photoshop where you’ll get an image of a lesser quality after enlarging the image too much.
The Pressure sensitive tablet is a great tool to draw,as the pen is a lot easier to use to transfer movements from your hand
to the screen.
It’ll also give you the option to put expressions’ in your drawingbecause the line thickness will vary depending on your pen pressure.
I’lll share the Illustrator settings that I’ve found to be useful for me..
I created a brush with brush stroke size 3 and 1 with specific settings,
Hit F5 this opens the Brush Window
-> Create New Brush-> Calligraphic Brush
Diameter 3 points ,angle 15° ,diameter style on pressure with variation of 1 point.
The same steps again but then diameter on 1
For the outlines the 3pt brush was used,
the rest was done with the 1pt.

As you can see I didn’t stick to my original drawing, when experimentating I went to a ‘non human skull’ and just kept
adding stuff to keep me experimentating.
- First stages are obviously placing lines to create shapes without too much detail but
that are still recognizable
Shadow is something that can mess up your drawing if aren’t completely 100% sure how to do it,it’s the effect that let’s your drawing pop out of the paper.
Be sure that the light comes from the same direction,if you are using one light direction, but there are enough tutorials on the internet of how to apply shadow/shading.
I know that i didn’t place a shadow to touch the ground,it’s still a Work In Progress..
-Then I started adding some hints of shadow to the side that’s closest to your viewing perspective.
- Filling up the huge shadows and adding some more to the previous ones.
- Very rough shadows on the inside of the mouth.
- Adding more detail,I tend to do this per style, cracks and holes on one layer, some more shadow to give more depth etc..
Ofcourse it’s nothing like a real tattoo-ist would do but this could be handy for people who might want to show something
so that a professional can pick it up and start working from your viewpoint.
